Sheikh Rasheed Announces Launch Date for E-Passport System

Federal Minister for Interior, Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, has announced that the e-passport system will be set in motion in the country by June this year. The announcement was made by the federal minister on Sunday during his visit to the Jinnah International Airport, Karachi.

E-passports will be fitted with a microchip containing all biometric information of an individual embedded in each e-passport, which will help authenticate the identity of the traveler.

Moreover, two pictures of the passport holder will be displayed on the main page of the e-passport. This initiative will help the airport authorities and enable them to complete the travel procedure in the minimum time.

The minister also inspected the immigration counters of the airport, and directed the authorities to increase the number of active counters. The visit highlights the government’s efforts to ease the load of passengers traveling overseas. The Interior Minister mentioned that Overseas Pakistanis are an asset of the country and their role in Pakistan’s economic development is critical.

During his visit, the immigration officials also briefed Sheikh Rasheed about the immigration procedure, after which the minister instructed the additional director of FIA–Sindh to complete new counters within the next two months.

“Promotion of tourism and trade are key aspects of the Prime Minister’s vision and online visas will boost the tourism sector. The government is taking steps in this direction, and it will also benefit the country’s economy,” the Interior Minister said.

Along with e-passports, Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed also announced the opening of more NADRA and passport offices in Karachi.
