Is Netflix Entering The Gaming Industry?

Over the years, Netflix has never wavered from its core feature as a provider of some of the best TV series and movies. However, over the years, the streaming giant has quietly flirted with other venues such as gaming for creating engaging content.

As picked up by international game show hosts who typically reveal such news, Netflix is now planning to launch a video game subscription service in the near future.

Despite the rumor mill holding nothing concrete to support this development, Netflix has quietly decided to hire a new executive who’d potentially spearhead the company’s rumored business venture. To add more spice to the gossip, the streaming giant released the following statement via GameSpot:

Our members value the variety and quality of our content. It’s why we’ve continually expanded our offering–from series to documentaries, film, local language originals and reality TV.

The statement further read that,

Members also enjoy engaging more directly with stories they love–through interactive shows like Bandersnatch and You v. Wild, or games based on Stranger Things, La Casa de Papel and To All the Boys. So we’re excited to do more with interactive entertainment.

From the outset, it feels like Netflix is targeting the same category of people who use Apple Arcade, a service that allows users to play 100 games for $5/month. However, similar rumors have surfaced in the past, and the above statement by Netflix won’t convince many.

Ultimately though, Netflix’s apparent push into gaming could just be another form of marketing for its upcoming video content. We’ll know soon enough.
