Ireland Becomes The First EU Country to Condemn Israel’s “De Facto Annexation” of Palestine

Ireland’s parliament has passed a parliamentary motion to condemn Israel’s ‘de facto annexation’ of Palestinian land, and in doing so, has become the first European Union country to use the phrase in relation to Israel’s actions in Palestine.

The motion tabled by the opposition Sinn Fein party was passed on Wednesday after being backed by both the government and opposition parties.

According to the Irish Foreign Minister, Simon Coveney, the motion “is a clear signal of the depth of feeling across Ireland”.

“The scale, pace, and strategic nature of Israel’s actions on settlement expansion and the intent behind it have brought us to a point where we need to be honest about what is actually happening on the ground. … It is de facto annexation,” Coveney maintained.

“This is not something that I, or in my view, this house, says lightly. We are the first EU state to do so, but it reflects the huge concern we have about the intent of the actions and of course, their impact,” he added.

The motion “must mark new assertive, consistent confrontation of Israeli crimes against Palestine,” the leader of the Sinn Fein party, Mary Lou MacDonald, tweeted after the vote.
