Shah Mehmood Qureshi Makes a Big Claim About FATF

Pakistan will soon be removed from the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) grey list, Foreign Minister, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, has claimed.

While addressing the media, Qureshi said Pakistan is moving forward with the FATF’s action plan against money laundering and terror financing (ML&TF) according to its national need and not at the command of anyone else.

He added that FATF placed Pakistan on its grey list during the tenure of PML-N. However, the incumbent federal government led by PTI has taken all the necessary steps to implement the 27 point action plan to remove deficiencies from the national ML&TF regime.

Last week, FATF’s virtual plenary was held from 21 to 25 June which decided to retain Pakistan on its grey list despite implementing 26 of the 27 points of the action plan.

In June 2018, the FATF had placed Pakistan on its grey list due to strategic shortcomings in its ML&TF regime after strong lobbying from India supported by the US, the UK, and the European Union (EU).

After Pakistan’s placement on FATF’s grey list, the Pakistani government had committed to a 27-point action plan to remove deficiencies from its ML&TF regime.
