Never Said Such A Stupid Thing: PM Imran Responds [Video]

Following his last month’s remarks on rape cases which drew severe criticism, Prime Minister Imran Khan has clarified that he “never said such a stupid thing” that a rape victim is “somehow responsible” for the crime committed against them.

The premier’s statement came during a recent interview with PBS News Hour when he was asked to elaborate his comments which indicated that a person who is raped is somehow responsible for the crime.

During the interview, PM Imran said that his last month’s comments were “deliberately edited and cherry-picked” and taken “completely” out of context, adding that anyone who commits rape, solely and solely that person is responsible for the crime.

No matter how provocative the woman is or whatever she wears, the person who commits rape is fully responsible. Never is the victim responsible.

He explained that he was talking in the context of Pakistani society which has witnessed a sharp rise in sex crimes including rape and child abuse cases.

The premier also said that he used the word “Pardah” during the interview. He clarified that pardah does not mean clothes or is restricted to just women. It also applies to men as well and means to “bring down temptation in the society.”

He noted that Islam has provided rights, dignity, and respect to women. They are treated with more respect in Muslim countries, including Pakistan, in comparison to Western countries.
