Pakistan Drops 3 Places on Monthly COVID-19 Resilience Ranking

Pakistan has dropped 3 places on Bloomberg’s COVID-19 Resilience Rankings, a monthly publication that ranks countries on handling Coronavirus most effectively and with the least social and economic disruption.

According to COVID-19 Resilience Rankings, Pakistan dropped to 46th position in September from 43rd place in August.

Bloomberg compiles the COVID-19 Resilience Rankings on the following indicators:

  • Growth in virus cases.
  • Overall mortality rate.
  • Testing capacity.
  • Vaccine supply agreements with pharmaceutical companies.
  • The capacity of the local healthcare system.
  • Impact of lockdowns on the economy and citizens’ freedom of movement.

Jumping up 3 places, Ireland sits at the top of the list. The country has been steadily moving up on the list since the start of 2021 when it faced a devastating outbreak.

Spain follows Ireland after moving up 8 places on the list. The Netherlands follows Spain and Ireland after dropping down 1 place in September.

Other Notable Changes

The US, the world’s biggest economy, dropped 3 spots to 28th place in September as it continues to grapple with the Delta variant outbreak.

New Zealand was lauded for handling the Coronavirus last year. However, the country moved down 9 places to the 38th position in September as it found itself in various degrees of lockdown.

Singapore fell 11 places to 19th in September, Israel dropped 5 spots to 41st, and India moved down 3 places to 45th place and is positioned just above Pakistan.

The UK jumped up 6 spots to 16th position as it eased travel restrictions for fully vaccinated people. Bangladesh moved up 5 places to 39th position as it recorded the lowest tally of daily deaths in four months and educational institutes reopened after almost a year and a half.

Southeast Asian countries continue to struggle to contain the Coronavirus, with Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines making up the last five on Bloomberg’s COVID-19 Resilience Rakings for September.
