Side Mirrors on Motorcycles Are Now Mandatory in Sindh

Motorcyclists in Sindh will now need to have side mirrors on their motorcycles as the Government of Sindh has approved an amendment in the Motor Vehicle Rules.

Chief Minister of Sindh Murad Ali Shah on Tuesday chaired a meeting of the cabinet in which he approved the amendment. Riders caught without side mirrors will be fined.

The government is making the decision in order to address the menace of the rising number of motorcycle accidents across the province.

On 5 May, two motorcycles collided near Karachi’s Native Ketty Bridge resulting in the death of two people. Later on 19 June, a trailer ran over a motorcycle near Karachi’s Northern Bypass which resulted in the death of a man and his child.

Last year, a man from Karachi filed a petition at Sindh High Court and challenged the law expecting side mirrors on motorcycles. The petitioner told the court that a law exempting side mirrors on motorbikes was passed by the provincial government in 1969, “but riding a motorcycle becomes hazardous without side mirrors.”

The petitioner also pointed out that “Motorists can’t see the vehicles coming from either side and it becomes more difficult when you’re wearing a helmet,” which in turn leads to accidents.

The petitioner asked that the law be repealed immediately and motorists riding motorbikes without side mirrors be fined.
