Govt Cancels Nomination of Azam Khan as Executive Director World Bank

The government has canceled the appointment notification of ex-SAPM Azam Khan as Executive Director World Bank (WB). Azam Khan served as principal secretary to the former Prime Minister, Imran Khan.

The government has also extended the tenure of the serving Executive Director WB, Naveed Kamran Baloch, by one year. Azam Khan was supposed to assume the role on 31 October 2022.

According to a notification issued by the Establishment Division on Thursday, the government has also notified the World Bank of the cancelation. Under this notification, Naveed Kamran Baloch will assume the role till 31 October 2023.

The previous government had reduced the tenure of Naveed Kamran Baloch from four years to two years to accommodate Azam Khan’s appointment.

The World Bank started the nomination cycle on 15 August, which will continue for one month.

The executive director represents Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Tunisia, Morocco, Ghana, and Algeria on the World Bank’s board. The executive director is hired to defend development projects of the seven countries while providing input on their macroeconomic reports, giving opinions on global economic issues, and defending quotas and voting rights of their constituency.
