ECC Approves Increase in Gas Prices by up to 173% for Domestic Consumers

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet on Monday approved an up to 173 percent increase in gas prices for domestic (residential) consumers.

Federal Minister for Finance Dr Shamshad Akhtar presided over the meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee.

A summary submitted by the Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division) regarding the revision of the natural gas sale pricing for the current fiscal year (FY24) was considered by the forum.

The ECC, after detailed discussion and deliberation, approved the summary as per the tariff schedule submitted by the Ministry, prospectively w.e.f. November 1, 2023, instead of 1st October, 2023.

There will be no change in prices for protected consumers but their fixed monthly charges will be raised from Rs. 10 to Rs. 400, a staggering 3900 percent increase. The fixed monthly charges will go up to Rs. 2,000 for the non-protected class.

The gas price for non-protected domestic consumers who use up to 0.25 (cubic hectometer) will be revised from Rs. 200 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) to Rs. 300 per mmBtu. Similarly, the gas price for non-protected domestic consumers who use up to 0.6hm3 will be increased from Rs. 300 per mmBtu to Rs. 600 per mmBtu, while the gas price for non-protected domestic consumers who use up to 1hm3 will be revised from Rs. 400 mmBtu to Rs. 1,000 mmBtu and the gas price for non-protected domestic consumers who use up to 1.5hm3 will be revised from Rs. 600 per mmBtu to Rs. 1,200 per mmBtu.

Likewise, gas price for non-protected domestic consumers who use up to 2hm3 will be revised from Rs. 800 per mmBtu to Rs. 1,600 per mmBtu and the gas price for non-protected domestic consumers who use up to 3hm3 will be increased from Rs. 1,100 per mmBtu to Rs. 3,000 mmBtu while the gas price for non-protected domestic consumers who use up to 4hm3 will be revised from Rs. 2,000 per mmBtu to Rs. 3,500 per mmBtu while the gas price for non-protection domestic consumers who use more than 4hm3 will go up Rs. 4,000 per mmBtu from earlier prices of Rs. 3,100 mmBtu.
