Arshad Nadeem Fails to Make Strong Comeback at Paris Diamond League

Pakistan’s premier javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem made a commendable return to competition, finishing fourth in the Paris Diamond League after a year-long hiatus. Despite not clinching a medal, Nadeem showcased his regained form and rhythm, an encouraging sign ahead of the Paris Olympics.

In his initial attempt, Nadeem threw 74.11 meters, progressively improving with each subsequent throw. His second attempt reached 80.28 meters, followed by an impressive 82.71 meters on his third attempt, propelling him into the top three.

However, in the fourth round, despite a strong throw of 82.17 meters, Nadeem was surpassed by Jacob Vadlejch, who threw an impressive 85 meters. In the fifth round, Nadeem needed a substantial throw to break back into the top three. He managed a throw of 84.21 meters, which, although commendable, left him in fourth place.

This event marked Nadeem’s first major competition since August 2023. Following a knee injury and subsequent surgery in England, his return to form is particularly noteworthy. His performance in Paris indicates a promising trajectory as he prepares for the Paris Olympics later this month.

Last year, Nadeem clinched a silver medal at the World Championships in Hungary. However, his injury woes caused him to miss significant events, including the Hangzhou Asian Games. His road to recovery has been arduous, but the successful surgery has put him back on track.

Nadeem is set to return to Pakistan on July 8 for a brief training stint in Lahore before heading back to Paris on July 24. This schedule allows him approximately 12 days to acclimate before his Olympic meet on August 6. Nadeem’s personal best throw of 90.18 meters, achieved at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, remains a high point in his career. He also finished fifth in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
