The Lahore High Court (LHC) has mandated the immediate demolition of brick kilns using outdated technology that contributes significantly to smog. Justice Shahid Karim issued the written seven-page verdict in response to petitions for smog eradication, filed by citizen Haroon Farooq and others.
In a decisive move, LHC has ordered the demolition of brick kilns causing smog. The judgment underscores the strict violations of court orders by brick kiln operators and holds the Department of Environment accountable for these infractions.
The written verdict highlights that the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Sheikhupura and the deputy director of the environment department have received a final warning regarding the enforcement of court orders. The ruling stipulates that DCs across Punjab will bear responsibility for any violations concerning brick kilns.
Additionally, the court acknowledged a report from the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC), which stated that its CEO has imposed a ban on cleaning activities on Canal Road between 7 to 10 am to mitigate smog.
To ensure compliance with environmental regulations, Judicial Commission members are tasked with inspecting industries around the Lahore Ring Road to verify adherence to smog-related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Furthermore, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has submitted a list of societies violating water usage principles. The court noted that while some societies have already paid fines, WASA has been directed to issue final notices to those yet to comply with the fines submission requirements.
