Microsoft has stepped in to aid IT administrators dealing with the aftermath of CrowdStrike’s faulty update, which caused widespread system crashes last Friday.
The tech giant has released a recovery tool to restore affected Windows devices. This tool creates a bootable USB drive that IT professionals can use to recover machines.
Although CrowdStrike has since issued a patch to address the issue, many devices cannot automatically install the fix. Some IT administrators have successfully resolved the problem through multiple reboots, while others have had to manually boot into Safe Mode to delete the problematic CrowdStrike update file. Microsoft’s recovery tool offers a more streamlined solution for those facing persistent issues.
Microsoft’s recovery tool streamlines repairing Windows machines affected by the CrowdStrike update. By booting into a Windows PE environment from a USB drive, the tool directly accesses the affected machine’s disk to remove the problematic CrowdStrike file.
This automated approach eliminates manual intervention, such as booting into Safe Mode or having administrator privileges on the machine. The tool can even bypass BitLocker encryption by requesting the recovery key, ensuring a comprehensive solution for affected devices.
Microsoft has provided specific recovery instructions for different scenarios. Users of Windows Virtual Machines on Azure can follow dedicated recovery steps outlined by the company. Additionally, Microsoft has published general recovery guidelines for all Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices on its support website.
