Pakistan summoned Germany’s senior-most diplomat on Sunday to register a “strong protest” over an attack on the Pakistani consulate in Frankfurt by a group of extremists, ARY News reported, citing sources.
On Saturday, a group of Afghan nationals pelted stones at the Pakistani consulate and brought down its national flag. Although the German authorities had allowed the group to protest peacefully, the demonstration turned violent, resulting in heightened tensions and damage to the consulate building.
German police have detained two Afghan nationals and are working to identify additional protesters through video footage, expecting to make more arrests.
Following the incident, sources informed that Pakistan lodged a formal protest, emphasizing the need for increased security measures to protect its diplomatic properties and personnel. The senior German diplomat assured Pakistan that all possible measures would be taken to ensure the security of its diplomats and properties.
Earlier, the Foreign Office (FO) strongly condemned the attack on the Pakistani consulate in Frankfurt and criticized German authorities for their failure to protect the consular premises. The FO’s statement highlighted that the attack breached the security of the consulate, endangering the lives of its staff.
The FO reminded the German government of its responsibilities under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, 1963, to protect consular premises and ensure the security of diplomats. The statement conveyed Pakistan’s strong protest and urged Berlin to take immediate measures to enhance the security of Pakistani diplomatic missions and personnel. Additionally, the FO called for the arrest and prosecution of those involved in the incident and accountability for the lapses in security.
