The ongoing delays in the Park Road expansion project have caused significant inconvenience for over 200,000 residents in surrounding areas. The project was originally scheduled for completion in December last year but has faced multiple setbacks.
Most recently, the “final” deadline set for July 14 by Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa was missed. Residents have voiced frustration over severe traffic congestion, especially as traffic narrows from three lanes to one, with no traffic police present to manage the situation. This issue particularly affects the residents of Bani Gala, Shahzad Town, Bahria Enclave, Chattha Bakhtawar, Green Avenue, and nearby areas.
The absence of effective traffic management has turned daily commutes into a nightmare with traffic jams on both sides of the road increasing travel time significantly. A CDA officer admitted that while the laying of electrical wires was complete, finishing the project by the end of this month is unlikely.
Yet Another Deadline Issued
CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa visited the site again and directed the contractor to expedite the work, setting a new completion deadline of August 14. Work on the project has been ongoing at an accelerated pace, including nighttime shifts. Progress has been made on one side of the road, while efforts are being intensified to complete the remaining work from Bani Gala Chowk to the endpoint. CDA has emphasized the need for coordination with traffic police to manage the flow of vehicles during construction.
Islamabad Expressway Project Also Missed Deadline
CDA is also focused on completing the ongoing work on the Islamabad Expressway by August 14. The rehabilitation and expansion of a 7 km portion of the expressway, contracted to the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), had an initial completion deadline of March 20, 2024, which has now been extended. While road carpeting is expected to be completed on time, additional work on two bridges may require more time.
In another development, a meeting regarding the Jinnah Medical Complex was held to finalize the Terms of Reference for hiring financial and technical advisory services. The meeting presided over by Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed Barth, discussed the design and master plan of the complex, emphasizing the importance of securing necessary services to ensure the project’s success. The CDA chairman was present with other key stakeholders underscoring the importance of this project in the city’s development plans.
