Pakistan Producing Export Quality Cars, Senate Body Informed

The Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production was informed on Wednesday that Pakistani automakers are producing export-quality cars.

The committee meeting chaired by Senator Aon Abbas was briefed by officials from the Engineering Development Board (EDB). Responding to questions, the official informed the committee that cars being produced in Pakistan are as per international standards.

The committee was further informed that there are only two locally manufactured cars that do not have airbags.

Speaking during the meeting, Federal Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain said that up to 65 percent parts of locally assembled cars are manufactured in Pakistan.

However, the minister said that due to high prices, it is difficult to export cars being assembled in Pakistan. Saleem Mandviwalla echoed similar views and said that the production cost of local cars is on the higher side.

The committee also directed to provide details of the Electric Vehicles Policy.

  • This goes to show how ill informed our decision-makers are about the ground realities of the auto industry in this country that they can be made to believe, and go along with, all that horse doo doo.
Morocco’s auto industry has an average localization rate of sixty percent. Utilizing that, their auto industry brought in over eight billion dollars of business to the country last year alone. Our auto industry is over three decades old and still has no presence in the export market. They might claim that sixty-five percent parts are localized, however that does not mean sixty-five percent of the costs are. That is why even such an old and mostly obsolete fleet of vehicles, especially in the case of the old three assemblers, is still so expensive.

  • Do not joke please. Do not fool the people either.
How many Parliamentarians are using these assembled in Pakistan (of international quality) cars?
