Patients in Lahore are facing increased financial strain as the cost of medical equipment has surged following the implementation of sales tax. Over 150 types of medical devices, including essential items like sugar strips and blood pressure machines, have seen significant price hikes, exacerbating the burden on those in need of medical care.

The Healthcare Device Association reported that the prices of some items have increased by 25% to 30%. Key examples include:

  • Sugar Strips: Prices have risen from Rs1,300 to Rs1,700 and from Rs1,500 to Rs2,000.
  • Wheelchairs: Prices increased from Rs13,000 to between Rs18,000 and Rs20,000.
  • Blood Pressure Machines: Prices have gone up from Rs3,800 to Rs5,000.
  • Syringes: A pack previously costing Rs3,500 now sells for Rs4,500.
  • Nebulizer Machines: Prices rose from Rs3,000 to Rs4,500.
  • Thermometers: Prices increased from Rs350 to Rs500.

Maqsood Ahmed, chairman of the Healthcare Device Association, highlighted the impact of these price hikes on patients. “As medical equipment becomes more expensive, the overall cost of treatment will rise, disproportionately affecting poorer patients,” he stated. He noted that approximately 95% of medical devices are imported, making their prices highly sensitive to changes in taxes and tariffs.
