Spotify was rumored to be getting a higher-tier subscription plan for several years, often referred to as “supremium.” This plan would offer improved audio quality compared to the current Premium tier.
After rumors surfaced last year and again in April 2024, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek has finally confirmed the company’s plans to introduce this higher-tier subscription, although it is still in its early stages of development.
The executive has confirmed that this new tier will be called Deluxe and has even confirmed the pricing, at least for the US. Here is what he has said:
It’s probably around a $17 or $18 price point, but sort of a deluxe version of Spotify that has all of the benefits that this normal Spotify version has, but a lot more control, a lot higher quality across the board.
Other than higher audio quality, Ek says that Spotify Deluxe will offer “a lot more control”, meaning we can expect to see more features that let you do more with Spotify.
Spotify reported a 12% increase in paying subscribers to 246 million in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year. This represents a 1 million subscriber increase over the company’s projections, leading to a 14% jump in Spotify’s share price in pre-market trading. Total monthly active users climbed 14% to 626 million.
Ek emphasized the importance of ad-supported free plans in developing markets, where user engagement and conversion rates differ from those in mature markets. The company plans to expand its marketing efforts and offer additional benefits to free users in these regions.
