In response to the recent monsoon rains that began on Sunday, the Commissioner of Rawalpindi has declared a rain emergency in the city. This decision followed a meeting led by the Commissioner, attended by the Managing Director of WASA and other key officials.
During the meeting, MD WASA informed the officials that Rawalpindi and Islamabad received 50 millimeters of rain. He added that the authorities are closely monitoring the situation at Nullah Lai.
The WASA official also informed the meeting about their department’s ongoing efforts to clear water from low-lying areas, with the water level at Gawalmandi Bridge reaching four feet.
After receiving a briefing from the officials, the Commissioner of Rawalpindi declared a rain emergency. He ordered all relevant departments to remain on high alert and monitor Nullah Lai.
Earlier, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) warned of urban flooding in Northern & Northeastern parts of Punjab including Lahore, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Gujrat, Rawalpindi/Islamabad, and surrounding areas.
Furthermore, southern parts of Sindh including Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Sanghar, Benazirabad, and Karachi, are also at the risk of urban flooding.
