Pakistan all-rounder Aamer Jamal has recently shared insights into the contrasting captaincy styles of white-ball captain Babar Azam and the current Test skipper Shan Masood. Having played under both leaders, Jamal shared his thoughts about Babar and Shan as captains of the national side, discussing their approach to the game.
Jamal made his international debut in 2022 during a T20I series against England under the captaincy of Babar Azam. He described Babar as a skipper who prioritizes securing the team’s position, often taking a defensive stance to ensure stability. Jamal said,
Bobby Bhai [Babar Azam] has a more defensive mindset. He focuses on securing the team’s position first, ensuring that we are in a strong place before taking risks.
In contrast, Jamal noted that Shan Masood, under whom he made his Test debut during a tour of Australia in 2023, adopts a more aggressive captaincy style. Shan is known for his proactive stance, often encouraging his team to respond robustly to challenges.
“Shani Bhai [Shan Masood] is more aggressive. He believes in responding to challenges with equal force. If someone throws a punch, he believes we should throw one too,” Jamal remarked.
Despite their different approaches, Aamir Jamal emphasized the supportive nature of both captains. He appreciates the understanding they extend to their players, often inquiring about their needs and preferences to help them perform better.
“As captains, both of them understand you and ask about your needs and what you require,” Jamal concluded, highlighting the communicative and supportive leadership style of both Babar Azam and Shan Masood.
