The Punjab government has provided financial assistance to German tourist Florian Berg, who was recently robbed and assaulted near Lahore Airport. The incident, which involved the theft of Berg’s valuables and cash, has prompted swift action from local authorities. The Punjab government handed Berg Rs500,000 as a sign of support.
The robbery occurred in the northern Cantt area, where 27-year-old Florian Berg had been camping during his cycling tour through Pakistan. According to the First Information Report (FIR) lodged by Berg, the attack occurred around midnight. He was targeted by two unidentified assailants who approached his campsite, demanding money and searching through his belongings. As Berg attempted to flee, one of the attackers grabbed him by the throat, physically assaulting him and forcing him to surrender his valuables.
Punjab Home Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal invited Berg for a meeting in response to the incident, assuring him that the police were actively working to apprehend the culprits. During this meeting, the home secretary presented Berg with Rs500,000 as a special financial assistance package.
Expressing his gratitude, Berg termed the robbery an unfortunate incident but emphasized his positive experiences in Pakistan. “The landscape of Pakistan is beautiful, and the people are incredibly hospitable,” he said. “This has always been my favorite country, and the hospitality shown by the people throughout my tour has been amazing. Despite this incident, I am happy to be here and will come back.”
Berg acknowledged that negative experiences can occur anywhere and expressed his appreciation for the support extended to him by both the people and the Punjab government. “The support I have received here has been unforgettable,” he added.
The home secretary reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all foreign tourists in Pakistan. “The government treats all foreign tourists as esteemed guests and takes extensive measures for their security,” Mengal stated. “The police are using modern technology to trace the robbers and are making significant progress.”
