The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) cabinet reversed the previous government’s decision to promote over 130,000 school teachers due to identified legal and administrative anomalies.
“The decision of the cabinet meeting, held on Jan 17, 2023, for the upgradation of various educational cadre employees in the education department has been withdrawn given legal and administrative anomalies identified by the finance department,” read an official statement released after the cabinet’s meeting, which was chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur.
Under the leadership of former Chief Minister Mahmood Khan, a substantial upgrade of KP primary teacher posts from BPS-12 to BPS-14 was implemented, benefiting 51,736 teachers across the province. The move also included upgrades for 18,000 teachers in BPS-14, 21,300 teachers in BPS-15, over 22,000 secondary school teachers in BPS-17, and certified teachers in BPS-15.
The reversal of this policy decision has sparked discussions about the implications for the educational sector in KP. The KP upgrades were initially intended to enhance the morale and financial status of teachers.
However, the finance department’s identification of legal and administrative anomalies has prompted the current administration to reconsider and ultimately reverse these upgrades. The specific nature of these anomalies has not been disclosed in detail, but they were deemed significant enough to warrant a complete rollback of the previous decision.
The reversal has been met with mixed reactions. Some stakeholders believe that the rollback is necessary to address the identified issues and ensure that any future upgrades are implemented correctly.
