India’s star wrestler Vinesh Phogat suffered a major setback in her quest to win the gold medal at the Paris Olympics, as she was disqualified from the women’s 50kg wrestling final on Wednesday after being found 100 grams overweight during the weigh-in.
The 29-year-old seasoned athlete was on a historic run after months of being bullied on the streets of Dehli. Phogat was on a mission, dishing out world-class performances at the Paris Olympics, including ending the unbeaten run of defending champion Yui Susaki. Then, after outwrestling Yusneylis Guzman of Cuba, Vinesh Phogat was well on her way to securing gold at the Paris Olympics and making her nation proud. Even reassured her “Gold lana hai,” in an emotional video call to Vinesh Phogat. However, that all came crashing down as she was deemed ineligible to compete on the day of the final.
Despite her team’s best efforts throughout Tuesday night, Phogat failed to meet the weight requirement during Wednesday’s weigh-in. This unfortunate turn of events has dashed India’s hopes of securing a gold medal in the women’s 50kg category.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) issued a statement expressing their regret over the disqualification:
It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand.
