Karachi has seen an increase in Congo virus cases recently. A 32-year-old butcher, who initially sought help at Dr. Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi, is now critically ill at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre due to worsening symptoms.
According to the Deputy Executive Director at JPMC, the patient has been transferred to the Sindh Infectious Disease Hospital and Research Centre for advanced treatment.
Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), commonly known as the Congo virus, spreads mainly through tick bites or contact with infected animal tissues and has a fatality rate of up to 40 percent.
There is currently no vaccine for CCHF in humans or animals. In August alone, Karachi has reported a total of five cases of Congo virus in the first two weeks of the month.
The Sindh Health Department stated that of the four treated cases in Karachi hospitals, three have resulted in fatalities. In addition, Balochistan has reported four Congo virus cases. The rising number of infections in Karachi and surrounding areas has raised concerns among health officials. The virus, which has a high mortality rate, can spread from animals to humans and between people.
Healthcare professionals are urging increased awareness and prompt medical attention for those showing symptoms of CCHF, such as fever, severe headaches, and bleeding. Authorities have stated they are closely monitoring the outbreak and are working to manage and contain the spread of the virus.
