The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has declined the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) proposal to host the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, originally scheduled to be held in Bangladesh.
Political instability in Bangladesh has prompted the ICC to consider alternative venues for the tournament that will be held from October 3 to October 20.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, in an interview with a local news media outlet, confirmed the decision to turn down the hosting offer. “The ICC approached us to host the World Cup, but I have clearly declined,” Shah stated.
He cited India’s ongoing monsoon season and the logistical challenges of hosting back-to-back World Cups, with India already set to host the Women’s ODI World Cup next year.
“I don’t want to send any signals that we are looking to hold consecutive World Cups,” Shah added.
With India out of the running, attention has now shifted to Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as potential alternative hosts.
The ICC, while initially focused on keeping the tournament in Bangladesh, has been forced to reassess due to the escalating political crisis.
An ICC official confirmed that the situation in Bangladesh is under close observation. “The ICC is closely monitoring developments in coordination with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), their security agencies, and our independent security consultants,” read an official statement.
The ICC emphasized that the safety and well-being of all participants remains their top priority ahead of the T20 Women’s World Cup.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, is making a final effort to retain the tournament, despite the challenges posed by the current political climate and internal struggles within the BCB.
