OpenAI has introduced a new feature for its GPT-4o model, allowing users to fine-tune its output for specific needs.
GPT-4o, a more affordable version of the powerful GPT-4, was released earlier this year with impressive capabilities. However, its training on a vast dataset of internet text meant its output might not always align perfectly with a user’s desired tone or style. Previously, users could attempt to guide the model’s output through detailed prompts.
Now, OpenAI offers a more streamlined solution: fine-tuning. This process acts as a final layer of customization, refining the model’s responses after its initial training. Despite requiring minimal effort, fine-tuning can significantly impact the model’s output.
OpenAI suggests that even with a couple of dozen examples, it can effectively adjust the tone and style of the generated text to suit a particular project or use case.

For instance, developers creating a chatbot can input a series of question-and-answer pairs as training data. After the fine-tuning process, GPT-4o’s responses will more closely resemble the style and content of the provided examples.
To encourage experimentation with this new feature, OpenAI is offering a limited free trial. Until September 23rd, users can fine-tune their models using up to 1 million training tokens without charge. After the trial period, fine-tuning will be priced at $25 per million tokens. Using a fine-tuned model will also incur costs. OpenAI will charge $3.75 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens for utilizing a customized GPT-4o model.
OpenAI emphasizes that users who fine-tune GPT-4o retain complete ownership of their business data, including all input and output generated during the process. This means that the data used to customize the model is never shared with other users or utilized to train other AI models.
Despite these assurances, OpenAI acknowledges the potential for misuse. The company has implemented monitoring systems to detect and prevent abuse of the fine-tuning feature. This includes measures to identify and address attempts to create models that violate OpenAI’s usage policies, ensuring responsible and ethical use of the technology.
