Govt to Shut down Utility Stores Corporation

The federal government has decided to shut down Utility Stores Corporation (USC) as it tries to get out of non-essential business operations, Secretary Industries & Production informed the Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production on Friday.

The secretary confirmed this development during the meeting of the committee while responding to Senator Saifullah Niazi’s inquiry about the future of Utility Stores.

The Secretary explained that efforts are underway to reassign Utility Stores Corporation employees to other institutions. He said the government’s subsidies to utility stores distort competition in the market, which is another reason for the planned closure.

  • After all, it is a useless Corporation due the same reasons, corruption and incompetencies plus they cannot give actual discounts – the more cheap items are now available at Imtiaz Super market and other like departmental stores, from where the poor people can easily buy groceries.

  • Non-essential business operations: providing affordable necessities to the public.
Essential business operations: VIP cars, protocols, free electricity, airline tickets, healthcare anywhere in the world, a 300 million dollar “fiber wall” when the country is going bankrupt, etc.

  • It should not have been opened in the first instance. No utility of this white elephant, a hub of corruption and burden on the exchequer.
