The Global Fund has demanded an investigation into the theft of mosquito nets valued at over Rs. 250 million from a government warehouse in Quetta. The organization has urged the Government of Pakistan to address the issue promptly and recover the stolen nets.
In a letter, which was also sent to the Prime Minister and Chief Minister of Balochistan, the Fund stressed the urgent need for effective malaria control measures in Pakistan.
The mosquito nets stolen were part of a Global Fund grant for malaria prevention in Pakistan. The Global Fund had repeatedly advised the government to ensure the grant. They also emphasized that ensuring the security of such aid is Pakistan’s responsibility.
The theft of mosquito nets is particularly concerning as Pakistan faces a severe malaria outbreak, with cases rising six-fold since the 2022 floods. The Global Fund’s letter highlighted Pakistan’s request for 2.7 million mosquito nets for 2024-26 to fight malaria.
It should be noted that mosquito nets valued at Rs 300 million were stolen from a Quetta warehouse. Sources within the health ministry revealed that the 368,000 stolen mosquito nets, donated by international organizations, were intended for distribution in three districts of Balochistan.
Currently, 1.8 million nets are still being distributed by an NGO in the region. The theft was uncovered by the NGO prompting a visit from the CMU team to investigate. However, there are concerns that efforts are being made to cover up the theft.

What a shame. This government is giving the country such a bad reputation that no organization would give funds for poor.
