Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has issued a directive to the Champions Cup mentors not to select players over the age of 35 during the tournament which will commence on September 12.
This decision aims to infuse the tournament with younger talent and provide opportunities for emerging players to showcase their skills on a prominent platform.
While this age restriction applies specifically to the Champions Cup, players above 35 years old will still be eligible to participate in regional and departmental tournaments.
The move has sparked discussions within the cricketing community, as several experienced players, including Abid Ali, Noman Ali, Sohaib Maqsood, Kashif Bhatti, and Asif Afridi, will be excluded.
These players, who have contributed significantly to Pakistan’s domestic and international cricket, will be sidelined from this particular competition.
PCB’s decision reflects a broader strategy to revitalize domestic cricket by focusing on youth development and creating pathways for younger players to progress to higher levels.
However, it also raises questions about the prospects of seasoned players who have been mainstays in the domestic circuit.
The shift could potentially alter team dynamics and the competitive landscape of the Champions Cup, as teams adapt to the absence of veteran leadership and experience.
The mentors of the Champions Cup include Waqar Younis, Shoaib Malik, Sarfraz Ahmed, Saqlain Mushtaq, and Misbah Ul Haq are all mentors of the competition that is scheduled from September 12 to September 29 in Faisalabad
