The number of pending cases in the Supreme Court of Pakistan has soared to an all-time high, reaching a staggering 60,508 cases, according to a recent report covering the period from August 16 to August 31.
During these 15 days alone, an additional 861 cases were added to the backlog. The report highlights that civil appeals make up a significant portion, with 33,269 cases currently awaiting resolution.
Meanwhile, 10,335 criminal appeals remain undecided. The report further revealed that 28 suo motu cases are still pending, alongside 2,064 review petitions.
Moreover, the Human Rights Cell has 134 applications under consideration, while 3,361 jail petitions are also pending.
While the Supreme Court grapples with a record number of pending cases, the National Assembly has delayed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill 2024. The bill, introduced in the Senate just a day earlier, proposes an increase in the number of Supreme Court judges to address the overwhelming backlog.
