Smoking continues to pose a fundamental problem in Pakistan, especially considering its long-term impact on public health and the economy. It is not just about the current smoking rates but the broader consequences of this habit across the population.
One of the major issues with the current strategy to reduce smoking in Pakistan is the heavy reliance on taxation as a deterrent. Although this approach might seem effective in theory, it has led to unintended consequences. As the prices of regulated tobacco products soar, smokers often turn to cheaper, lower-quality alternatives due to affordability issues.
This shift not only fails to address the underlying causes of smoking but also leads to increased public health costs and higher mortality rates. Without offering viable alternatives, this strategy can result in greater defiance and acceptance of smoking among the general population.
Hence, Pakistan’s current tobacco control strategies need to be re-evaluated. Instead of focusing on taxation, the country needs to consider integrating Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) strategies into its policies. By offering products like vapes and oral nicotine pouches, which are scientifically proven to be less harmful than smoking, Pakistan can guide smokers toward a path of reduced harm through informed decision making.
By providing accurate information and promoting THR alternatives, the government can help reduce the number of smokers while also addressing a range of factors that influence smoking behavior.
