England all-rounder Moeen Ali has officially retired from international cricket at 37, marking the end of an illustrious career that spanned over a decade.
Ali, who last represented England in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, made his decision after being left out of the squad for the upcoming series against Australia.
In a candid interview with former England captain Nasser Hussain, Moeen explained his reasoning. “I’m 37 years old and didn’t get picked for this month’s Australia series. It’s time for the next generation,” he said. “I’ve done my part.”
Reflecting on England’s future, Moeen Ali acknowledged the team’s focus on preparing for upcoming tournaments like the ICC Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup.
“I could hold on and try to play for England again, but I know the team needs to evolve. It’s about being real to myself,” he added.
Since making his debut in 2014, Moeen has been a crucial player for England, featuring in 68 Tests, 138 ODIs, and 92 T20Is, amassing 6,678 runs and 366 wickets.
He was instrumental in England’s victories in both the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup final against Pakistan in Australia.
Known for his dual role as a batter and a spinner, Moeen concluded his Test career with 204 wickets, placing him third on England’s list of most successful spinners, behind Derek Underwood and Graeme Swann.
