Apple has unveiled its latest high-end smartphones, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, boasting significant upgrades across the board. These new models feature the cutting-edge A18 Pro chip, introduce the innovative Camera Control, and promise a substantial improvement in battery life.
The camera system has received a major overhaul, sporting new main and ultrawide lenses. The standard Pro model now includes a 5x telephoto lens, bringing it closer to parity with its larger sibling.
Design and Display
Apple has retained the premium titanium design from the previous generation while pushing the boundaries of display technology. The company claims these new iPhones feature the thinnest bezels ever seen on an Apple product.
In terms of screen size, the iPhone 16 Pro measures 6.3 inches, while the Pro Max sets a new record for Apple with a massive 6.9-inch display. Both models are protected by the latest iteration of Ceramic Shield, which, despite its name, is not ceramic. The Always-On and ProMotion features are still around.
Internals and Hardware
Cutting-edge technology powers Apple’s latest A18 Pro chip, manufactured using an advanced 3nm process. This new silicon boasts a redesigned 16-core Neural Engine, pushing the boundaries of on-device artificial intelligence, which Apple calls Apple Intelligence.
Performance gains are evident across the board. The chip delivers a 17% boost in overall system memory bandwidth, enhancing the capabilities of its 6-core GPU. This graphics powerhouse now operates up to 20% faster than its predecessor.
At the heart of the A18 Pro lies a next-generation 6-core CPU, which Apple boldly claims is “the fastest in a smartphone.” This processing unit comprises two high-performance cores paired with four efficiency cores. The result? The ability to handle the same workload as the iPhone 15 Pro while consuming 20% less power and completing tasks 15% more quickly.
Apple Intelligence
Apple’s highly anticipated AI features, collectively Apple Intelligence, will not be available at launch as initially speculated. Instead, the company plans a phased rollout beginning with a free software update next month.
This initial release will introduce a suite of features in US English, accessible in “most regions around the world.” The first wave includes Writing Tools, audio recording and transcription with summarization capabilities, condensed notifications, Priority Messages for Mail, email summaries, enhanced Siri with improved comprehension, and the ability to type queries to Siri.
Looking ahead, Apple has outlined plans for a second wave of AI-powered features to be released “later this year” and “in the months following.” This future update will introduce Image Playground, allowing users to generate custom images and emoji.
Siri is set to become more personalized, leveraging individual context to deliver tailored intelligence. The virtual assistant will also gain on-screen awareness, enabling it to understand and act upon visual information. Notably, integration with ChatGPT is also slated for this later, yet-to-be-specified release window.
Cameras
The new 48MP Fusion main camera features an improved quad-pixel sensor that Apple claims is faster and more efficient. This advanced hardware enables a smartphone industry first: 4K video recording at 120 frames per second with Dolby Vision support.
Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the promise of zero shutter lag when capturing 48MP images in both ProRAW and HEIF formats. Another notable addition is the ability for both iPhone 16 Pro models to capture spatial photos, expanding on the spatial video capabilities introduced in previous generations.
The second and third cameras include a 12MP telephoto unit capable of 5x optical zoom with 3D sensor shift OIS and a 48MP ultrawide unit.
Battery and Pricing
No mention of battery capacities as always, but the starting price for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max is going to be $999 and $1,199. The new colors are called black titanium, natural titanium, white titanium, and desert titanium.
