The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has imposed a fine of Rs 10 million on K-Electric (KE) due to electrocution incidents in Karachi between 2022 and 2023, which led to the deaths of 33 individuals.
According to the details, NEPRA rejected K-Electric’s response to the show-cause notice and imposed the fine. The regulatory authority instructed K-Electric to deposit the fine in a designated bank within 15 days.
Regarding the specific incident where the fine was imposed, NEPRA’s report noted that the cause was still not established, whether the victim was electrocuted or encountered a heart attack as there was no physical mark of electrocution on his body according to the doctors’ information. Despite KE not being found involved, NEPRA directed K-Electric to compensate the victim’s family with Rs 3.5 million and provide a job to a next of kin in the deceased’s family.

K-Electric, however, maintained that no negligence was found on its part in 32 of the 33 electrocution cases. “NEPRA’s investigation found no negligence by KE in 32 of the electrocution-related incidents that occurred in Karachi from July 2022 to June 2023. The fine was imposed for an unsatisfactory response in one case. KE will respond after thoroughly reviewing the report,” the company stated.
