Another Province Reports Suspected Monkeypox Cases After KP

At least three passengers suspected of having monkeypox were identified at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport on Sunday, according to sources. The individuals were returning from Middle Eastern countries, and authorities have transferred them to the Sindh government’s Infectious Diseases Hospital.

The passengers will remain in isolation while they await test results to confirm whether they have the virus. So far, Pakistan has confirmed six cases of monkeypox, with most of them reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Monkeypox, or Mpox, is a virus that can cause flu-like symptoms and skin lesions. Though the infection is typically mild, it can lead to serious complications, particularly in children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the recent monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency in August 2023, following the identification of a new variant. Since January 2023, more than 27,000 cases and over 1,100 deaths have been recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo, primarily affecting children.
