Lahore Launches Crackdown Against Loader Rickshaws

Lahore traffic police have launched a strict crackdown on unsafe loader rickshaws, banning their entry on key model roads like The Mall, Jail Road, Canal Road, Gulberg Main Boulevard, and areas in Cantonment.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Amara Athar stated that rickshaws carrying oversized and dangerous items such as iron rods, steel pipes, and bamboo will no longer be fined but will now also face legal action. Over 11,000 loader rickshaws have already been fined for violations, but with the new measures, offenders will now face FIRs.

“There will be no compromise on public safety. Any driver caught overloading will be booked under FIRs instead of simple fines,” CTO Amara Athar emphasized. The traffic police warned that drivers and vehicle owners would be included in the FIRs if they violate load limits.

Persistent offenders may even face the cancellation of their licenses. Special checkpoints have been set up on major roads, including Allama Iqbal Road, GT Road, and Ferozepur Road, where officers will inspect headlights, reflectors, and indicators.

To ensure effective enforcement, additional traffic personnel have been deployed, and PSCA cameras will monitor vehicles violating the rules.
