Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a series of sustainable and environmentally friendly measures under the Suthra Punjab Programme, aimed at significantly enhancing cleanliness across the province.
In a recent statement, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized the program’s inclusive approach, highlighting that rural areas will be incorporated into large-scale cleaning efforts for the first time. This expansion reflects a comprehensive strategy to improve sanitation standards throughout the province, ensuring that all communities benefit from enhanced waste management practices.
The Chief Minister underscored the importance of adopting proper waste disposal methods and advocated for a shift away from plastic usage, which is a major contributor to pollution. By promoting sustainable practices, the Suthra Punjab Programme aims to foster a cleaner and healthier environment for Punjab’s residents.
In March, Punjab’s Local Government Minister, Zeeshan Rafique, pledged to introduce innovative sanitation models as part of the Suthra Punjab Programme. He reiterated the government’s commitment to leveraging modern technology and adhering to international standards in waste disposal. Each district administration is tasked with establishing appropriate waste dumping sites to facilitate efficient waste management.
With a population exceeding 127 million, Punjab generates approximately 57,500 tonnes of waste daily. However, only 18,438 tonnes are disposed of properly, leaving a significant daily backlog of nearly 49,000 tonnes. Minister Zeeshan Rafique highlighted the urgent need to address this escalating issue, particularly in Lahore, where significant disposal efforts have been made over the past month.
The Suthra Punjab Programme represents a notable shift in the province’s approach to sanitation, with a focus on both urban and rural areas. By integrating villages into the cleaning campaign, the initiative aims to create a cleaner, more sustainable environment for all residents.
