Pakistan Launches Satellite-Based Broadband Internet Rivaling Elon Musk’s Starlink

Pakistan has achieved a significant milestone in its space program with the successful launch and operation of PakSat-MM1, the country’s first multi-mission satellite. This satellite marks Pakistan’s entry into the realm of space-based broadband services, representing a major leap forward in the nation’s technological capabilities.

Shaza Fatima, Pakistan’s Minister of State for Information Technology, made the announcement, coupling it with news of the country’s first National Space Policy. The minister underscored the critical role of PakSat-MM1 within this new policy framework, highlighting its potential to revolutionize connectivity across Pakistan, particularly in remote and underserved areas.

Fatima emphasized the satellite’s importance in addressing one of Pakistan’s persistent challenges: providing internet access to rural regions where traditional infrastructure development has proven challenging. The minister expressed optimism about the transformative potential of this technology, suggesting that it could lead to significant advancements in key sectors such as education and healthcare through increased digitalization.

SUPARCO Chairman Yusuf Khan and PakSat CEO Khalid Rashid have lauded the satellite’s wide-ranging capabilities. According to their statements, PakSat-MM1 is set to deliver a comprehensive suite of services, including broadband internet, telecommunications, and data transfer.

Khan and Rashid emphasized that PakSat-MM1 is expected to significantly improve internet speeds nationwide. Moreover, the satellite’s ability to provide 5G coverage addresses the longstanding challenges of high costs and logistical complexities associated with developing traditional telecom infrastructure in hard-to-reach regions.

In a bold projection, Khan and Rashid suggested that the successful implementation and utilization of PakSat-MM1 could potentially boost Pakistan’s GDP by up to 2.5%.

  • Please control your upward flight or else you will hit the Moon. For the last over two months you have made the users suffer with extremely poor internet services by installing firewalls or snowwalls or whatever. Why do you want to compel the people to see what you like? This does not happen even in the authoritarian States. Please allow the people live their lives. Forget your unfounded security concerns. Who is threatening your security?

  • What a joke!
Hardly any technical evidence is available/given in this regard except for the “honourable” ministers word on this. There is hell of a difference between having established a broadband test connection between a satellite and a ground/mobile station and commercially making a reliable service available for the masses.

And please stop making any mentions of starlink versus an outsourced PakSat-MM1 satellite which we call our own. The bitter reality behind the minister making these claims is the pressure building for not letting Starlink launch in Pakistan due to “regulatory” compliance issues (which is basically only one requirement of the tight and little minded running the country, of providing access to user and usage information), which does not seem to happen with Musk, just like with other services like PayPal, and there is nothing we can do about it.

And then we ask, why we are like what we are.

If it was a competition in corruption would have believed it.

  • There is a limit to lying and click waiting, unfortunately my country Pakistan has launched a satellite in this industry today. Sky limit is the limit for this boomers generation.

  • there should be comedy section also on propakistani where people get such news for laughter. sattar bhai worked hard to compete with starlink.
