Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Faruque Ahmed announced that the board cannot ensure the security that star cricketer Shakib Al Hasan has requested to participate in the upcoming Dhaka Test against South Africa.
Shakib, who has declared this match as his potential farewell to Test cricket, expressed his desire to play his final game on home soil, contingent on Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) tour proceeding as planned.
The uncertainty surrounding the tour arose from the political unrest in Bangladesh during July and August, which resulted in numerous casualties amid anti-government protests.
Shakib Ali Hasan, a former member of parliament for the Awami League, the party targeted by the protests, was implicated in a murder case following the government’s fall on August 5. Since then, he has remained outside Bangladesh, citing safety concerns as a barrier to his return.
Faruque emphasized that the BCB lacks the authority to provide personal security, stating, “Shakib’s security is not in the board’s hand. His safety must be addressed at the highest governmental level.” He also noted that Shakib’s legal issues are sub-judice, limiting the board’s involvement.
Despite the challenges, Faruque respected Shakib Al Hasan’s decision to retire, acknowledging the cricketer’s difficult circumstances. Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s law adviser, Asif Nazrul, expressed hope that Shakib would not face arrest if he returned to play.
BCB’s Shahriar Nafees echoed this sentiment, suggesting that assurances from government officials have bolstered the board’s confidence in Shakib’s safe return.
Shakib prepares for what could be his final Test in India and remains hopeful for a resolution that would allow him to conclude his illustrious career in front of his home crowd.
