Bangladesh’s most celebrated-turned-infamous cricketer, Shakib Al Hasan has announced his retirement from T20I cricket with immediate effect.
The announcement was made ahead of the Kanpur Test against India, marking a significant moment in his illustrious career. Shakib also revealed that the upcoming Dhaka Test against South Africa in October will be his last.
Shakib’s decision comes at a tumultuous time, both personally and politically. His involvement in politics as a member of parliament under the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s administration has been a source of controversy. Elected on an Awami League ticket, Shakib’s political affiliations have drawn scrutiny, especially following the fall of the Awami League and the ensuing civil unrest in Bangladesh.
Amidst these political upheavals, Shakib has faced significant legal challenges. Unable to return to Bangladesh due to multiple charges filed against him, he has been living abroad. While on tour in Pakistan with the Bangladesh team, Shakib Al Hasan was charged with the murder of a garment factory worker in Dhaka on August 23. Instead of returning to Bangladesh with his team, he chose to travel to England, further complicating his situation.
Adding to his woes, Shakib is currently embroiled in a serious legal predicament with the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission. The commission has imposed a financial penalty of 5 million Taka on him for allegedly manipulating stock prices. Accusations of breaching the Securities Act have been leveled against him, citing his involvement in artificially inflating share values in the stock exchange.
These legal and political challenges have overshadowed Shakib’s cricketing achievements, casting a shadow over his retirement announcement.
