In April, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended an invitation to Ibrahim to visit Pakistan after the two met in Riyadh during the World Economic Forum. Shehbaz also encouraged Malaysian businessmen to explore investment opportunities in Pakistan.

The last visit by a Malaysian Prime Minister took place in 2019 when Mahathir Mohamad met with Imran Khan. During that visit, the two leaders addressed a range of bilateral, regional, and international issues. They agreed to elevate Malaysia-Pakistan relations to a strategic partnership, expanding cooperation in areas such as agriculture, food retail, energy, science and technology, and telecommunications investment.
