India defeated Bangladesh in the second Test match of the series at Kanpur to complete an emphatic 2-0 clean sweep.
Less than 24 hours after initiating an improbable chase in a match where only 35 overs had been bowled over the first three days, India’s batters successfully chased down their target of 95 runs in just over an hour. A standout performance on Tuesday was marked by Ravindra Jadeja striking thrice, which triggered a collapse for Bangladesh during an extended first session, leading to their all-out score of 146. India lost three wickets while chasing the target, but Rishabh Pant sealed the victory which was set up by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s quick-fire fifty off 43 balls. With this win, and the 2-0 series sweep, India has strengthened their position at the top of the WTC points table.
Bangladesh began the day at 26 for 2, but after Jadeja, supported by Akash Deep, took three wickets in successive overs, they crumbled to 94 for 7 from 91 for 3. Jadeja ended a solid 55-run partnership between Shanto and Shadman, dismissing both alongside Litton Das and Shakib Al Hasan. R Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah also contributed with three wickets each, effectively dismantling the Bangladesh lineup with tight bowling and mounting pressure.
Bangladesh started the day 26 runs behind, and Ashwin for India made an early breakthrough by dismissing Mominul Haque for just 2 runs. Despite this setback, Shadman Islam responded strongly, hitting four boundaries off Ashwin, including three cover drives and a back-foot cut. His aggressive batting helped boost Bangladesh’s confidence and briefly put them in the lead.
Jadeja likely bowled last due to the left-hand batters and quickly struck, dismissing Shanto with a reverse sweep attempt on his first ball. He then had Litton caught behind for just 1. Meanwhile, Akash Deep dismissed Shadman after his half-century with a delivery that led to a catch in the gully, ending his innings at 101 balls. Jadeja continued his dominance, taking Shakib’s wicket with a slow delivery, finishing his early spell with impressive figures of 3 wickets for 3 runs in 2.2 overs.
With Bangladesh at 94 for 7, Rohit Sharma reintroduced Bumrah, who immediately took the wicket of Mehidy Hasan Miraz with a stunning delivery. Mushfiqur Rahim managed to delay the end by scoring two consecutive boundaries off Jadeja, pushing Bangladesh’s score closer to 100.
Bumrah dismissed Taijul Islam lbw just before lunch, extending the session. Mushfiqur Rahim tried to annoy the hosts by taking control with only one wicket left. However, Bumrah returned for one final over before the break and bowled a slow offcutter that caught Mushfiqur off guard, ending the session and wasting his earlier efforts.
India started aggressively, taking advantage of Bangladesh’s lack of pace. Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a sweep caught at deep backward square leg, while Shubman Gill fell lbw for 6 to a low delivery. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal shone with his third half-century, hitting boundaries and a six in a 58-run partnership with Virat Kohli. The pair almost saw the hosts home together, but Jaiswal misplayed a shot with just three runs needed, prompting Rishabh Pant to step in and finish the job.
