Former Pakistan cricket captain Salman Butt has called for the inclusion of fast bowler Akif Javed in the national team for the upcoming Test series against England.
The series, which is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25, is set to commence on October 7 in Multan. Butt’s recommendation comes amid concerns over the fitness of key pacers Shaheen Afridi and Aamer Jamal, both of whom are recovering from injuries.
Afridi, a pivotal figure in Pakistan’s bowling lineup, sustained a knee injury during the Champions Cup, while Jamal was injured playing county cricket in England.
With their fitness in question, Butt emphasized the necessity of having a robust backup plan. He argued that Akif Javed, known for his pace and precision, would be an ideal candidate to fill the void left by the injured bowlers.
Butt also took the opportunity to commend the emerging talent showcased in the recently concluded Champions One-Day Cup.
He highlighted the performances of young players like Ali Raza, who impressed with his accuracy and strategic approach, and Jahandad, a promising left-arm pacer.
Additionally, Butt praised Abdul Samad for his powerful batting and Haider Ali for regaining form, noting the contributions of senior players such as Babar Azam and Salman Ali Agha.
Salman Butt’s insights highlight the importance of nurturing young talent while ensuring experienced players are fit and ready to compete at the highest level.
