Six migrants, including Pakistanis, were tragically killed by Mexican soldiers during a highway chase in Chiapas state, according to the Mexican defense ministry. The incident occurred when soldiers, suspecting criminal activity, fired on vehicles fleeing at high speeds late Tuesday.
The patrol encountered 33 migrants from Pakistan, Egypt, Nepal, Cuba, and India. However, authorities have not confirmed the nationalities of those who died. Four migrants were killed instantly, while two others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
According to a police report, soldiers began chasing the truck after it failed to stop at an army checkpoint. They fired gunshots in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The driver tried to escape by turning down a dirt road but lost control, leading to the deadly incident.
The two soldiers involved have been suspended, pending an investigation.
The surviving migrants have been handed over to immigration authorities for further processing. The deaths underline the dangers migrants face as they journey through Mexico, often risking fatal accidents or exploitation by criminal groups in their bid to reach the United States. An investigation into the soldiers’ actions is ongoing.
