The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has shared its weather forecast for October, suggesting near-normal rainfall but slightly above-average temperatures across the country. This mix could lead to increased smog in urban areas.
According to PMD, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and some parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are predicted to receive slightly less rainfall than usual. Overall, temperatures are expected to be a bit higher, especially in Gilgit-Baltistan and western Balochistan.
These warm and humid conditions could promote the growth of dengue larvae, raising concerns for public health. In mountainous regions, the rising temperatures also pose a significant risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), threatening vulnerable areas.
The forecast also mentions the possibility of scattered showers, which may include hail and windstorms that could affect Kharif crop harvesting. As air quality worsens, the chances of smog formation in the plains are increasing.
The combination of near-normal rainfall and higher temperatures is likely to worsen smog conditions in cities. However, the expected rainfall should provide enough water for crops and vegetables, helping to ensure healthy growth and stable yields throughout the month.
