Google’s AI Powered Anti-Theft Features Reach Android Users

Google’s new theft protection features have started rolling out for some Android users. These features discourage thieves from targeting Android devices by making stolen phones harder to reset and reuse. There are three new features: The Thief Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock.

These new features seek to give users a quick way to lock down their devices if swiped, discouraging robbers from accessing sensitive data. Android reporter Mishaal Rahman stated on social media that the first two tools, Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock, randomly appeared in a Xiaomi 14T Pro. Also, some Pixel users have started noticing the Remote Lock feature.

The Three Features

Theft Detection Lock triggers when a phone is physically snatched from your hand. In May, Google revealed that this feature uses AI to detect if someone grabs your phone and attempts to run away or drive away. When this happens, the phone’s screen automatically locks.

Offline Device Lock, another security feature, locks the phone’s screen once it disconnects from the internet, guaranteeing that a thief can’t bypass security by turning off the connection.

In addition to these, Remote Lock allows users to lock their phones remotely without requiring their Google account password. You can use your phone number and a quick security challenge on any device to lock the phone quickly and securely.

While the rollout has been limited so far, we expect these features to expand across more Android devices soon, improving security against phone theft and giving users better peace of mind in public.
