Punjab Govt Forms New Department to Control Prices and Commodities

The Punjab government has established the Punjab Price Control and Commodities Management Department (PCCMD), effectively replacing the Food Department. This move consolidates various bodies from different departments under one authority to improve food security and commodity management across the province.

The government has appointed Muhammad Ajmal Bhatti as the secretary of the newly created department. The PCCMD  has administrative control over the Punjab Food Authority and the Agriculture Marketing Regulatory Authority, previously managed by the Food and Industries Departments.

This change follows amendments to the Rules of Business 2011, and the department has been tasked with legislation, policy development, and planning to ensure food security. It will oversee wheat procurement, storage, and distribution, along with regulating food safety, hygiene, and business practices.

Additionally, the PCCMD will handle the regulation of flour and sugar mills, contractor registrations, and price monitoring of essential goods. It will work to protect consumers through consumer protection councils and oversee inter-provincial trade.

A key responsibility of the department is to maintain a comprehensive database tracking the demand and supply of essential commodities, considering factors like seasonal changes and market conditions. The department will also develop supply chain management systems and conduct economic studies to support policy-making.
