Toyota and Subaru are set to expand their electric vehicle (EV) offerings beyond the bZ4X and Solterra models with a new joint project. This upcoming zero-emission SUV is expected to enter production in January 2026.
Unlike their previous models, this new EV will be manufactured at Subaru’s Yajima facility rather than Toyota’s Aichi factory.
Rather than designing this SUV entirely from scratch, the automakers will incorporate elements from the existing bZ4X and Solterra, streamlining development and reducing production costs. Toyota and Subaru aim to produce between 15,000 to 20,000 units monthly, with plans to target major markets such as North America, Europe, and Japan. Additional global markets may also be in consideration.
Pricing details for this new model remain uncertain. The bZ4X and Solterra are currently priced at $44,465 and $46,340 in the U.S. market, and it is yet to be determined whether the upcoming SUV will be more affordable.
As for sales performance, Toyota sold 13,577 units of the bZ4X in the U.S. by September, while Subaru’s Solterra was less successful, with 9,137 units sold during the same period. In comparison, competitors such as Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 (30,318 units), Kia’s EV6 (15,985 units), and Honda’s Prologue (14,179 units) have shown stronger sales.
This new SUV is just one of several future projects for Toyota and Subaru. The two automakers have previously confirmed that they are working on three additional EV models, all of which will be crossovers. With production expected to commence in January 2026, official announcements about the new SUV are anticipated in the second half of 2025.
Despite their focus on EVs, both companies remain committed to developing combustion engines. Earlier this year, Toyota, Subaru, and Mazda held a joint conference revealing plans for new and improved internal combustion engines (ICEs), signaling a continued interest in traditional vehicle technologies alongside their electric ambitions.
