Saeed Anwar Refused PCB’s Coaching Offer For This Reason

Former Pakistani leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed has disclosed the real reason behind Saeed Anwar’s refusal to return to cricket despite a valid coaching offer from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The elegant left-hander is considered one of the finest openers Pakistan has ever produced with his performances defining a generation of cricket in the 90s and early 2000s, cementing his place among the sport’s elite.

Anwar’s crowning moment came in 1997 when he smashed a then-record 194 against arch-rivals India in Chennai—a score that stood as the highest in One Day Internationals for 12 years. He went on to score 8,824 runs in 247 ODIs, including 20 centuries and was equally prolific in Test cricket scoring 4,052 runs in 91 innings, punctuated by 11 centuries.

However, in August 2003, Anwar made the decision to retire from the sport at the age of 34, and what followed was an unexpected silence from the cricketing legend. In a sport where former players often take on roles as coaches, commentators, or administrators, Anwar chose a different path— disappearing from the cricketing scene entirely.

Recently, former teammate Mushtaq Ahmed shed light on Anwar’s absence from Pakistan cricket. In an interview, the former leg-spinner revealed that Anwar had been approached to take up a role with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on the advice of then-chief Shehryar Khan. But Anwar politely declined.

The reason? Saeed Anwar had turned his focus to a higher calling—preaching. According to Mushtaq, Anwar explained that his commitment to his faith had become his primary mission in life, and he had no desire to return to the game that made him a household name.

Pakistan tried to replicate Anwar’s magic through the promising talents of Salman Butt, Imran Farhat and Nasir Jamshed but none seemed to work out. With Saeed in their corner, who knows how their careers had panned out?
