Western Australia’s One-Day Cup defense suffered a brutal blow after a monumental batting collapse in their match against Tasmania at the WACA Ground.
The batting side lost 8 wickets for one run with that solitary run coming off a wide as The Warriors were skittled out for a mere 53 runs in 20.1 overs.
Tasmania’s Beau Webster led a ferocious attack, recording career-best figures of 6-17 from six overs, while Billy Stanlake chipped in with a devastating 3-12 as WA crumbled from 2-52 to 53 all out in the space of 34 legal deliveries, the second-lowest score in One-Day Cup history.
WA’s innings began on shaky ground and quickly spiraled out of control.
Cameron Bancroft (14 off 29) was the first casualty in the collapse, trapped lbw by Webster. The wickets then tumbled in rapid succession: Ashton Turner followed, lbw two balls later, with Josh Inglis bowled out by Stanlake immediately afterward. Cooper Connolly, Hilton Cartwright, Ashton Agar, Jhye Richardson, and Joel Paris all departed without scoring as WA’s innings reached an unceremonious end.
Opener D’Arcy Short managed to top-score with 22 runs, but the scoreboard remained dismal for the reigning champions.
It is not the first batting collapse that Western Australia has suffered as their previous record low of 59 was set against Victoria in 1969. This loss leaves WA with a 1-3 record and a difficult path forward, needing wins against Victoria, South Australia, and Queensland to keep their finals hopes alive.
