Australia’s captain Pat Cummins has hilariously poured cold water over speculation of an international return for David Warner.
The left-hander was rumored to be making a case for his return against India in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy but Cummins has assured everyone that that is not the case. Warner retired from tests earlier this year with a farewell match against Pakistan in Sydney and officially bowed out from the international scene after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Australia has struggled to find their opening pairing since his retirement with several players trying the mantle and failing. Speculation started to mount of Warner’s return with an important series against India in the offing.
Pat Cummins, meanwhile, responded with his trademark humor on The Grade Cricketer podcast, acknowledging Warner’s lighthearted suggestion. “Dave, we’re very interested. We’re taking it very seriously and we’ll be in touch, mate,” Cummins quipped. “I talked to Dave a few days back…I told him, ‘Good luck with the [Sydney] Thunder and I look forward to seeing you on Fox.’” Cummins continued, “The truth’s probably somewhere in the middle—he likes a bit of back-page action, but he’s retired.”

With Warner officially ruled out, the competition for Khawaja’s opening partner intensifies. Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft, and rising star Sam Konstas have all been selected for Australia A’s squad to face India A, and these games may well shape Australia’s final Test line-up.
The highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy kicks off November 22 in Perth with Pat Cummins hoping to lead his side to more success.
